FAQ: Submitting Referrals


At JPMorgan Chase, we know that our people are our most valuable asset, and hiring diverse, talented individuals at all levels is critical to our continuing success. We value all sources of talent, including referrals, to fulfill our mission of doing first-class business in a first-class way.

In order to be compliant with the Hiring of Referred Candidates Policy, all referrals must be made through our Referral Portal. When referring an individual to the Firm, you become their Referring Party. You can refer someone to the Firm as a general referral or you can refer someone for a specific job. As the Referring Party of the candidate, you must accurately designate your referral. The designation may drive the need for additional information during the recruiting process. If you become aware of facts indicating that the referral designation should be updated, you are required to submit a new referral with the new information. By submitting the referral, you agree that you are accountable for your selection, agree not to interfere with the hiring process at any time, and will abide by the Company’s Code of Conduct and Anti-Corruption Policy

In addition to the referral’s name and email address, you will need to provide the following information when submitting a referral:

  • My Referred Candidate:
    1. Is a government official
    2. Was introduced to me by a government official
    3. Is a client/potential client of the firm
    4. Was introduced to me by a client/potential client of the firm
    5. Is a professional/professional acquaintance AND is not also a client/potential client of the firm or a government official
  • Based on the answer to the question above, my referral designation is:
    • (1 & 2) Government Official
    • (3 & 4) Client/Potential Client
    • (5) Personal/Professional
  • Are you related to the candidate you are referring?
    • Yes
    • No

Who is eligible to submit a referral?
All employees are eligible to submit a referral.

Can I receive a referral award payout for my referral?
Not all employees are eligible for a referral award payment. Click here for more information about the Employee Referral Award for payment eligibility requirements.

What differences can I expect if I make a campus versus an experienced referral?
Campus – When submitting a referral for a campus program, you will submit a general referral. The referral will receive an email with instructions to apply to the firm. You will not receive a referral award payment for your campus referral.

Experienced – Referrals for experienced positions can either be a general referral or a referral to a specific job. You may receive a referral award payment for your experienced referral. Not all employees and not all positions are eligible for a referral award payment.

How do I know what designation type to select?

I submitted the referral with an incorrect designation type/the designation type has changed, what do I do?
You will need to submit another referral for that individual and include the new designation type. If your original designation type was a Client/Potential Client or Government Official, you may still be asked to provide additional information as part of the recruiting/hiring process.

Can I forward a resume to HR or a Hiring Manager?
Candidate resumes can be sent to HR or Recruiting without logging a referral if you do not want to endorse or support an individual or receive updates on the candidate’s status. However, you must log a referral if you are sending a resume to a hiring manager. You may also instruct a candidate to visit JPMC Careers to learn about openings and job opportunities. If you want to endorse or support the individual at a later time, this becomes a referral and you must submit the referral through the Referral Portal.

What if my referral does not have an email address?
An email address is required when submitting a referral. Your referral can create a personal email address at no charge through many online providers.

Can I refer someone for more than one position?
Yes, a referral can be submitted on behalf of a single candidate for multiple positions. However, you only need to submit the referral to one position as you will have referral ownership for 6 months from the initial submittal date for purposes of an award payment. How do I know my referral was received?
After submitting the required information, you will receive a “Thank You” message on screen and you will be able to see the referral listed in your ​Referral Portal. Although the referral is listed in your Referring Party Portal, you will not be able to view the requisition number(s) that you referred him/her to, only the candidate name.

Can I submit a referral after s/he has already been hired?
Referrals must be made through the Referral Portal prior to the applicant being hired in the system of record (Taleo). You may submit a referral after the hire has occurred for compliance purposes but would not be eligible for an award payment. See Employee Referral Award for further information on payments.

Can I submit a referral if my candidate has already started interviewing for the position?
Yes, referrals can be submitted throughout the recruiting process. See Employee Referral Award for further information on payment awards.

I am having technical difficulty with submitting a referral. Who can help me?
You can contact accessHR for technical difficulties when submitting a referral. Please have the following information available when you contact them: Your SID, name of Referred Candidate, Referred Candidate’s email address.

I logged my referral. Can I call the Recruiter or a Hiring Manager for a status update?
You may call the Recruiter to receive a high-level status update (e.g., interviews are in process, invited to first-round, offer extended, etc.) – and the Recruiter can let you know where the candidate is in the process. You may also view what jobs the candidate has applied for in the Referral Portal (this applies to experienced, not campus candidates). It’s important to be mindful of optics. Recruiters are trained on the extent of information they may provide, so asking for information beyond a high-level status update could be perceived as trying to influence the process. Reaching out to the Hiring Manager could also be perceived as such, so we suggest limiting contact with the Hiring Manager to conveying the merits of the candidate.
