A lawyer in the Australia & New Zealand Legal team who will provide legal support to the Australia & New Zealand Markets business.  This team covers all aspects of the Australia & New Zealand Markets business. You will be expected to interact with sales and trading desks for Fixed Income Currencies & Commodities, Cash Equities, Equity Derivatives, Electronic Trading, Futures & Options/OTC Clearing, Prime Services, as well as other lines of business in the Markets space. You will also interact with relevant internal departments such as Credit, Operations, Compliance, Business Controls and Tax, as well as with Legal colleagues based in the region.

The successful candidate will report to the Senior Markets Lawyer for the Australia & New Zealand Markets business. This is a technically challenging role requiring excellent drafting and communication skills and a strong understanding of the legal and commercial aspects of Markets related transactions. The role will give the candidate great exposure to a variety of work, and will also expose the candidate to global, regional and domestic legal issues.

Core responsibilities of the role include:

  • Providing legal support to the various desks within the Markets business including Fixed Income Currencies & Commodities, Cash Equities, Equity Derivatives, Electronic Trading, F&O/OTC Clearing, Prime Services, as well as other desks in the Markets space;
  • Identifying and advising on legal and regulatory issues affecting the Australia & New Zealand Markets business such as the application of financial services laws (e.g. Corporations Act, Market Integrity Rules), regulatory guidance and policy documents;
  • Negotiating legal agreements with counterparties (for example, standard documentation such as AMSLAs, Terms of Business for Cash Equities, trade confirmations etc.) and creating new legal document templates as and when required;
  • Working closely with structuring, operations, sales and trading teams on novel and complex product offerings and drafting relevant documentation for such transactions; and
  • Instructing and managing external counsel where necessary.

Essential skills/experience:

  • Qualified in Australia or similar jurisdiction (PQE 3 years +);
  • Knowledge of financial markets law;
  • Excellent drafting skills developed at a major law firm or investment bank;
  • Strong technical legal and communication skills, including the ability to present clear and concise legal advice;
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills, and ability to manage competing priorities;
  • Confident and proactive, with an interest in working closely with the Business; and
  • Team player.

Desirable skills/experience:

  • Experience with multiple asset classes such as fixed income, FX, commodities, credit and equities, and related legal and regulatory issues; and
  • Experience with ISDA/derivative documentation and transactions.
