The J.P. Morgan Legal Department seeks a lawyer with a background in discretionary investment management and regulatory law for the Private Bank Legal Group in EMEA.  The role will be based in the London office in Knightsbridge and is an exciting and varied opportunity to provide legal coverage across the Private Bank’s broad range of investment management solutions. The successful candidate will be part of an international legal team and work with colleagues across Europe, the United States and Asia.   The candidate will be a team player, commercially aware and attuned to the needs of a global business, be able to take the initiative and have a collaborative approach to the provision of legal support. 
Key Responsibilities
  • Support the Private Bank’s managed products team by providing general legal advice on the launch of new investment management mandates, keeping up to date with new legal and regulatory initiatives affecting the product area.
  • Advise the Private Bank in relation to conduct of business obligations relevant to discretionary investment management business for retail clients.
  • Draft and review investment guidelines and investment restrictions.   
  • Advise on the development of policies, procedures and controls for the discretionary investment management business.
  • Work closely with colleagues in different locations in EMEA and other regions to provide consistent legal advice to the business, acting as a main point of contact for the business where required. 
  • Coordinate, instruct and support J.P. Morgan’s external legal advisers.
Qualifications, skills and experience
  • Attorney must be licensed to practice law and a member in good standing in the state/jurisdiction in which the position is based or otherwise in compliance with the in-house counsel registration rules of that state/jurisdiction
  • First class English language drafting and negotiation skills.
  • Familiarity with EU laws and the UK regulatory regime applicable to the Private Bank’s managed products offered to retail clients.   
  • An understanding of discretionary investment management and an interest in further developing these skills and acquiring expertise in respect of other investment products.
  • A knowledge of the private wealth management industry and cross border licensing and marketing regimes applicable to private banking products and services would be an advantage.
  • Ability to develop strong relationships with the business and fellow legal and support professionals.
  • Business aware, proactive, and able to provide practical advice and solutions to meet business needs.
  • Good judgment and decision-making skills.
  • Ideally, experience gained within a top law firm and/or in the legal department of a top tier financial institution (preferably a private client business).
