User Interface Designer Job Summary

Over the past couple of years, J.P. Morgan is embarking on a transformation of corporate finance by incorporating emerging technologies such Python, data science, and machine learning into the products we create. We are actively seeking energetic, innovative and experienced UI Designers with a passion for creating simple, beautiful solutions to complex problems to join our new UX Lab that is part of the EDA team. The UI Designers will be responsible for establishing and refining Lean UX best practices and a standardized UI kit to serve as the foundation for corporate finance application development.

To be successful in this team, you obsess over understanding the customer and their context, enjoy creating user flows + prototypes to explore concepts and tell the story behind your design. You pay attention to the details and love polishing your work until it shines. You should be an expert in the latest trends in modern web and mobile application design. You have worked on multi-platform designs in the past. You understand and are skilled in balancing innovation with consistency.

You believe that designing without prototyping is like cooking without tasting. You’re familiar with wide range of design tools and love to learn new ones. While you don’t need to be an expert in HTML/CSS/JS or XCode, you understand enough of these platforms to let your designs flourish natively. You must have the ability to quickly respond to design challenges with prototypes — paper prototypes for participatory research, medium fidelity click-through Keynotes for validation of direction, and more detailed and interactive Axure prototypes for detailed design refinement.

In this role, you will be part of a multi-disciplinary business and technology team that is committed to designing the future of corporate finance. As a UI expert, you will help set the direction, vision, and methodology for this new UX Lab team and set the bar for an innovative future of corporate finance with energy and passion. This will require a strong point of view on design, hands-on creation of experiences, developing strategies for implementation within a complex ecosystem and building meaningful relationships within the organization. You will elevate design not just to solve users’ problems but also to steer a product’s evolution over the long term to be professional, innovative and high quality, ready to provide simple and innovative experiences for our internal customers. You will be a part of the dynamic team of highly talented individuals and will be encouraged to contribute ideas, learn, design and implement. You will be working to deliver new experiences through effective artifacts (from Customer Journeys & Ecosystem Maps to Participatory Design Prototypes & Wireframes). A balanced understanding of strategy, research, interaction and visual design is a must for the role.

We are looking for highly professional UI designers who enjoy collaborating and have excellent communication skills. You’ll appreciate good design aesthetics, handle pressure well, and be excited to serve as a model for delivering quality (yet pragmatic) UIs which could ultimately influence the broader organization.

Key Responsibilities
  • Designing the user experience from a finance end user perspective
  • Establishing and continuously refining Lean UX best practices and a foundational UI kit for the technology team to use in developing finance applications
  • Create robust documentation and artifacts (i.e. UI Toolkits) that are valuable beyond the immediate team
  • Design next-generation user interfaces by applying your awareness of design, human-computer interaction, and the skills you’ve learned from delivering UIs within a design-led product development environment
  • Enable the technology team to easily create frontend interfaces by blending technical skills and design craft and creativity in delivery so that you’re able to imagine how the interface could work and help the technology team bring it to fruition

  • Strong working knowledge of HTML5 and JavaScript using various libraries / frameworks like React, Angular, jQuery, ExtJS, etc. Working knowledge of PhosphorJS is a plus.
  • Experience designing and building Design Themes using advanced CSS techniques and is comfortable using css preprocessors such as LESS and SASS as well as strong working knowledge of Sketch and associated design tools
  • Awareness and practical understanding of current technologies and their application and relevance to digital experiences
  • Ability to create wireframes when necessary to help flesh out complex interactions for development
  • Experience leveraging user interface design patterns and standard UCD methodologies with ability to influence others and provide thought leadership on design
  • Can demonstrate and talk about past deliveries of complex and rich user interfaces
  • Has a keen eye to design detail and the overall finished effect especially in the areas of typography, data visualization and other visual arts
  • Ability to synthesize complex, interdependent, and sometimes competing needs along with ability to change direction based upon team and stakeholder consensus
  • Actively listens, hears and understands what is said and not said, and with nuanced comprehension of meaning and intent
  • Develops and sustains effective and cooperative working relationships with peers, managers and other internal or external stakeholders and is an effective communicator of design solutions across the roles and levels
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment along with aptitude for continuous improvement
  • 5+ years of experience in experience design and graphic / visual development required
  • Minimum of 3 years’ hands-on experience
  • BFA or BA or equivalent in a design, computer science or internet related field or relative experience, graduate design degree preferred
  • Experience in banking or financial services industry would be preferable
  • Experience working with or within an agency is a plus
