Group description:
Market Risk is an independent control group which performs a key role in the bank's control framework.   We work in partnership with the business to ensure that risk positions are adequately identified, measured, monitored and controlled. 
MR seeks to facilitate efficient risk/return decisions, reduce volatility in operating performance, and make the Firm’s market risk profile transparent to senior management, the Board of Directors and regulators.  Market risk coverage staff has regular dialogue with traders around risk appetite, risk limits and individual large and complex transactions.
MR highlights concentrations in risk and work with the trading and quantitative groups to fully understand their implications from a risk/return perspective.  The coverage group forms the primary interface for discussing risk issues with the Front Office.


  • Review new transactions/products
  • Enforce Market Risk limits, in particular monitor utilization vs stress vs risks not captured in VaR, review inter-limits consistency (within the same Business and across LoBs)
  • Work with the VaR methodology team on changes (for instance, new calculators), analysis, investigation, documentation. Also, highlight best/worst VaR days and VaR/Stressed-VaR drivers
  • Analyse stress scenarios, in particular highlight tail risks within the firm-wide stress framework as well as ad-hoc. In depth analysis of existing pricing framework in stress
  • Highlight concentrated or concerning risk positions and work with FO to ensure they are appropriately reported and managed
  • Track current market environment against core risks, to ensure P&L surprises are avoided
  • Work with the Front Office, Quantitative Research, Model Review Group, Finance, Middle Office and Valuation Control on all risk management issues
  • Partner with FO and other MR coverage groups to develop new tools and metrics to make the important risks and P&L drivers more transparent to senior management


  • Good analytical & quantitative skills with focus on risk management
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to quantitatively analyse, distil and communicate key information from financial data
  • Good project management skills and attention to detail
  • Good knowledge of and keen interest in financial markets and derivative products
  • Proficiency in Excel is required.
