The Private Investments (PI) business sits within the CIO, Treasury and Corporate (CTC) line of business.  PI has a dual mandate in that the business is responsible for the orderly wind down of the firm’s Heritage Private Equity (HPE) activities as well as the evaluation and management of prospective Strategic Investments (SI), working closely with all the Lines of Business (LOBs). 


PI is seeking an Executive Director level Business Manager based in New York.  The role will report to the CFO of PI and work closely with members of the PI Finance team based in New York and Chicago.


Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

  • Partnering with the business heads to understand priorities, issues, challenges and requirements and provide business management support as needed
  • Establishing strong relationships with functional partners including Finance, Risk, Legal, Compliance, Oversight & Control, VCG, Tax, Audit and other functions in support of the PI business with the objective that our investing activity is managed to a high JPM standard with the necessary degree of oversight, governance and control
  • Managing key governance activities; examples include, but are not limited to:
    • Weekly PI team meeting agenda
    • Monthly management reporting using the iLevel system
    • Quarterly portfolio management reviews
    • Strategic Investment Committee (SIC) meetings
    • CTC Risk Committee updates
    • Fed reporting
    • Presentations to the LOB Senior Sponsors
    • Preparation of annual team offsite materials
    • Ownership of PI Manual, including compliance with documented procedures
  • Managing key controls or initiatives for PI such as:
    • Record retention project management
    • Quarterly refresh of the PI Restricted List (in conjunction with US Control Room)
    • Annual negative media review
    • RCSA process (in conjunction with Oversight & Control)
    • Regulatory reviews (Merchant Banking, Volcker)
    • Maintenance of Material Risk Inventory (MRI) for PI
    • Audits of SI or HPE activity as required
  • Ensuring information on the SI portfolio is accurately maintained and updated by managing the annual confirmation of portfolio data with each LOB Senior Sponsor
  • Managing data updates to the portfolio companies on a real-time basis via the iLevel system
  • Ensuring investment and divestment activity is performed and documented in accordance with the PI investment checklist
  • Suggesting and implementing controls to improve efficiency and accuracy of existing processes across the SI and HPE portfolios

The candidate must be a highly organized self starter who is able to work in a fast paced, results driven environment and possess a keen attention to detail.  In addition, the candidate should be confident and have excellent communications skills. These characteristics are critical as the role will have deep interaction with many functional areas and have global exposure, accountability and responsibility.

  • 5+ years work experience in financial services; accounting background and knowledge of private equity investing a plus
  • Business Management or Program/Project Management experience a plus
  • Ability to prioritize and drive efforts across various stakeholders and be able to handle multiple tasks at the same time while having excellent time management skills
  • Good judgment, maturity and poise to enable interaction/influencing of senior level staff
  • Thoughtful analytical skills; able to develop, clearly present and draw conclusions
  • Inquisitive nature with advanced problem solving and critical thinking capabilities
  • Ability to work independently with the focus on efficiency and quality
  • Excellent people and organizational management skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Energetic, self motivated and effective under pressure - must enjoy the challenge of working within a fast-paced and demanding working environment
  • Advanced knowledge of MS Excel and PowerPoint/PitchPro, and SharePoint
  • Experience with iLevel or relational databases a plus
